Bongun and Munak |
Arina and Takashi were moving their way through the maze like dungeons. As Arina hacked, slashed, stabbed and bashed her way clear of undeads, Takashi, on the other hand was yapping away while he healed her and the undeads. “Oh yea, and that was that one time when I fell faced down in front of-.” “Erm, Takashi-kun, don’t you have any other stories to tell besides your experience?” Arina asked wearily as she bashed a Munak out of the way. “Ahh, now that you’ve mentioned-,” Takashi started excitedly as he looked at the disappearing Munak body. “-there is one story or folk tale that is frequently told among Payon people especially the elders. It’s the story of Bongun and Munak. Thought there are many adaptations of the tale but I like this one the most…let me tell you…”
Once upon a time…hmm…need a different beginning. Ahem~ Long time ago when Midgard was filled with greenery and peace, there was a tale from the depths of Payon City. Ahem~ Ahem~ There were two teenage lovers, a braid hair girl, Munak and a boy with a short danggie, Bongun. Munak and Bongun were childhood friends. Munak the normal village girl and Bongun the village chief’s only son. They loved each other a lot and spend most of their time together in Payon Archer village, chasing each other through the trees, laughing and joking around. The villagers were always happy to see them and agreed that they made a perfect couple. Unfortunately for them, Bongun’s father, the chief did not. He was never happy with his son’s relationship with a mere commoner and arranged that he would marry the daughter of a wealthy blacksmith from Alberta. Bongun wasn’t happy and he got into a huge argument with his father. Bongun continued to be with Munak. His father was raging but he left them alone as he thought of a plan to separate the two. Evil he is…
However, Munak and Bongun were both so naïve that each plan to break them fails. Everything the chief could think of, all failed miserably. Day by day their love for each other grew, and Bongun popped out the very question every girl had ever dreamed of…marriage. Munak accepted and both were to be wed in a week’s time. Bongun’s father was ever raging. Both father and son went through another heated argument which led to Bongun’s leave from his home. The danggie boy was happy staying with his soon-to-be wife and she too was ever happier. But, sadly, their happiness is about to end, as something terrible happened.
War.
It was a bleak time. Chaos struck every city and town, lives lost, damaged homes, burning wreckage. Payon was the city worst hit by the war.
It was chaotic there. Villagers run around calling for help and some trying to flea. Amidst the situation, the boy, Bongun was franticly looking for his Munak. Calling out to her and hoping to find her safe. But what he was about to find out, wasn’t going to be what he wanted…
A shrill cry was heard by him, from someone familiar, over the other yells and screams from the villagers. It was from Munak! Bongun ran towards the voice. It was from the castle steps. When he reached his eyes were widen, in horror at what he saw. His dear Munak, sprawled in a pool of blood, pale as her attacker pulled his sword from her chest. He yelled and drew out his own dagger. Furiously he slashed the attacker but he escaped. Bongun would have chased after him and finished the job but he had returned his attention to Munak. He hurried towards her and kneeled. Holding his dying Munak in his arms as silent tears stream down his face, it was like time stood still. Munak trembled in pain as she used the last of her energy to pull Bongun’s face down for one last kiss. Her time was coming to an end, she knew it too well. They kissed each other as Munak slowly fell into a deep forever sleep. Bongun hugged her tightly as he continued to sob. The love of his life, vanish before his very eyes, an unbearable pain which could never be erased.
War had ended but the pain and suffering continues to rain down. Funerals were held and in Payon, a funeral for those who died, were the most sober of all. Bongun stood next to his dead love, who was dressed in red traditional robes. Pale she was but still beautiful in his eyes. Still lovingly he brushed her hair with his finger. “Don’t worry my dear, I’ll find a way. We’ll be together again, I promise,” he whispered to her, even thought she couldn’t hear. Everyone was so sad for Bongun, except for the wicked chief, who soon arranged for a wedding to be held for Bongun now that commoner Munak was out of the way. Bongun had an absurd plan well for most people it is absurd but to him it was the only way. He traveled to Comodo in search for a witchdoctor who was famous for his amazing talismans. After much persuasion the witchdoctor finally agreed and gave Bongun the most powerful and rare talisman he ever made. A talisman that brought life…undead life.
One dark and silent night, Bongun left his home and visited Munak’s body which was still in the casket at her home. He moved quick but quiet as a ninja. He waited until no one was around and opened the casket. He smiled as he saw his Munak. “It won’t be long now…” He stuck the talisman onto her hat and whispered a few spells. “Arise my dear Munak, let this talisman bring you back, I call for you my love, arise!” The talisman glowed an eerie yellow as Munak’s face turned even paler and slightly blue. “With the power of this talisman, I summon you back from the underworld, Munak, return to me!” Munak slowly opened her eyes. The colour of her pupil, were that of deep blood red. She sat up slowly and faced Bongun. Munak looked at him, “Bongun?” she uttered softly, her voice like that of a soft echo. Bongun was smiling and overjoyed. He hugged her. She was cold as ice but still he was happy, for she was back and he wanted to make sure it stays that way.
Bongun carried Munak off to the Payon Dungeon, a place thought dark but the safest place for her. He brought her to dungeon 3 where practically no one even dared to go. Bongun came daily to meet her and spend more than half his day with her. Munak was indeed happy to be with her Bongun again, yet she felt that what he did was far wrong. She hadn’t the heart to tell him.
Then one day, Bongun’s father invited the blacksmith family to the palace. They were there to discuss the wedding plans. Bongun once again wasn’t happy about it. The chief had no idea Munak was brought back to life and insisted that he marry the blacksmith’s daughter. “I had enough of this nonsense, good bye! Forever!” he said in a low hiss and started to leave. His father ordered his men to stop him but they were no match for the highly skilled fighter Bongun. He ran off to the Payon Dungeon. He had an awful idea but it was the only way he could be with his Munak forever and never be parted with her.
Being an undead himself...
“No, Bongun don’t!” Munak said to him when he told her his plan. “But Munak dearest, it’s the only way for me to be with you!” he said to her, his eyes full of determination. “But Bongun, you’ll suffer! You have no idea how it feels to be a living dead! I don’t want you to waste your life! My love, please! I beg you not to do it!” Munak held onto his arm. If only she still had tears, she would be crying now. “I’m sorry, dearest. My mind’s made up. I rather die than live with another woman but you,” he said slowly, releasing Munak’s grasp on him. He moved away from her and took out a talisman. This talisman was somewhat different. It has the ability to change a living being into an undead. He placed the talisman on his own hat and whispered a different spell that before. “Powers of the underworld, I, Bongun summon you. Release your coldness of death on me…” He felt an awfully cold wind swirl around him. He gritted his teeth as he felt his legs and hand turn ice cold. Munak watched helplessly as Bongun turned pale white and bluish. She covered her eyes as Bongun yelled in pain. The coldness were like daggers piercing through him. He clutched his chest as he felt the coldness reaching to an end. His legs gave way and he fell on his knees, one hand on the ground avoiding him from falling. His eyes shut as the coldness fully surrounded him. It was finally over. He felt nothing but cold wind around him. He reopened his eyes. They were of blood red too. To avoid him from turning into a human back, he ripped half his talisman off, making the spell on him unbreakable. Bongun walked to his Munak, who was kneeling on the ground, her hands covering her face. She trembled as he touched her and looked up. Thought those eyes were blank and red, she could still feel his loving gaze. “Why? Bongun, why?” she whispered to him. “Isn’t it obvious?” Bongun asked as he gently stroked her cheek. “Because I love you, Munak.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Sigh, such a tragic love story,” Takashi ended his story, the back of his hand on his forehead. “It’s so interesting to find out about these stuff, don’t you think so Arina-san?” he asked her beaming.
“Erm…Takashi-kun, talk later,” Arina said her voice with a slight urgent tone.
“Why?”
“Because I think we better…RUN!!!!!” Takashi turned to see Arina running towards him and was shocked. A dozen Bonguns and Munaks were jumping behind her. Arina caught Takashi by his collar and dragged him out of the dungeon.
